Winter garden
in Breiðholt

Ideas concerning a winter garden in the uppermost part of Seljahverfi were introduced in the summer of 2020 and were well received and the project is now going full speed. A draft of a zoning plan is now available after the state, the City of Reykjavík and Kópavogur municipality presented an agreement about the location of Arnarnes road by the end of 2020.

For all city residents

In order to keep the area open all year round there will be used variously natural snow, snow production, and so-called dry slope skiing on varied slopes and adventure tracks that will be formed especially in the area. These include a long distance skiing track that will extend towards the south along Seljahverfi.

An observation platform will be at the top of the slope with a terrace, benches and tables and a restaurant and a service centre. There are also plans for a ski and snowboard rental, a sleigh and bike rental, a skiing school offering skiing and snowboard lessons, and kiosks selling tickets and refreshments.

The winter garden is intended for everyone; kindergartens, primary schools, leisure activities centres, social centres, skiing societies, corporations and various organisations, individuals and families. It will be possible to organise all kinds of gatherings and events there.

Promotes outdoor activities and exercise

The benefits of the winter garden are many. It will support the development of the skiing aread in Bláfjöll and Skálafell and it contributes to increasing outdoor activities and exercise and it is therefore beneficial to public health. Its operation will be guaranteed the whole year and it is well located.

Transportation choices to and from the area are good, the climate is generally advantageous on top of Seljahverfi and the view over the city is excellent. The planned location of Arnarnesvegur road was decided in October 2020, in an agreement between the Public Road Administration, the City of Reykjavík and the municipality of Kópavogur. The road will for the most part be located within Kópavogur. The location of the Arnarnes road is economic for the winter garden and the diverse activities there during the whole year. The Arnarnes road has been marked on neighbourhood plan drawing for Seljahverfi and Upper-Breiðholt which can be accessed here on the site.
