Dance and gymnastics hall
The location of a dance and gymnastics hall on the grounds of Gerðuberg in upper Breiðholt will support the cultural, educational and sports centre of the area at the urban street Austurberg.
Already present there are the cultural centre Gerðuberg, leisure activities centre Miðberg, a music school, The junior college in Breiðholt, a swimming pool and other sports facilities. Situated there is also the public square Markúsartorg, which is scheduled for a makeover. The Breiðholt link of the City Line (Borgarlínan) is also planned to go through the area in the future.
All types of dancing will be encouraged
The expectation is that all types of dancing will be able to flourish in the dance and gymnastics hall, which will serve both the residents of Breiðholt and the city as a whole. By encouraging diverse dancing practices, such a house can further support the multinational community in the city and open up new kinds of communication.
The dance and gymnastic hall
The idea is that the dance and gymnastic hall should be 2-3 floors and 2-3,000 m² with a multiple-purpose hall, a gymastics and karate hall, a smaller dance hall, locker rooms, storage facilities and an entrace hall.
Initially the plan was to find a location for a gymnastics hall in Upper-Breiðholt, in accordance with the agreement between the city and ÍR from the year 2017. Already then, the idea was to include dancing and, therefore, during the needs analysis for the project, considerations were made for the requirements of the operation of dancing schools.
In 2020, the city council approved to delegate to the environmental and planning division the job to come up with a proposal for the location of a dancing and gymnastic performance house in Upper-Breiðholt, which has now become a proposal in the neighbourhood plan, in close connection with the area centre at Gerðuberg.
